Dear ACME friends,
Great things have been happening with the ACME program lately, and people are noticing! Since our ten-year anniversary celebration last October, we were awarded the 2024 Award for an Exemplary Program or Achievement in a Mathematics Department by the American Mathematical Society. This award is given to at most one math program nationally each year, so it is a great honor and reflects well on all the great students and faculty of ACME. You can read more about the award at the link below in this email.
This past April 62 seniors finished the ACME senior core, we are proud of their accomplishment and pleased to see them move on to new adventures. We were also pleased to welcome a new cohort of 63 students entering the junior core this month and look forward to working with them over the next two years in the ACME core.
One other important new development is that we’ve decided this year to try a junior cohort that starts in January (Winter semester) 2025. Students joining that cohort will finish their senior core in December 2026. Previously students who wanted to do ACME but just weren’t quite done with the prerequisites in time to start in Fall had to wait another year to start the junior core; but this new Winter start should allow them to jump right into the core with no waiting. In the past students who had interruptions to their study, whether for health reasons, or family reasons, academic needs, or even for a study abroad also had to wait for another full year to get back into the right next classes in the following cohort; but now such students can avoid the year wait and switch immediately into the cohort covering the next set of courses they need. We hope this make it easier for students in the program to finish and make ACME more attractive to students considering the program.
Finally, we have been really putting a lot of effort into supporting students as they look for internships and jobs. To that end we hired Allie Sensinger last year, who is actively connecting with many employers and helping students find opportunities that match their interests and needs. We also have the support of Heidi Jarvis, who has been teaching our Career Essentials course for several years and who has recently expanded her services to one-on-one advising about students’ resumes and cover letters. Both Allie and Heidi have done a great job and are very effective at helping students and alumni get rewarding positions that fit their needs and interests.
We invite you to help us place our students in great jobs and internships by reaching out to me or Allie (allies@math.byu.edu) with any internship or job opportunities you may know of. Your support and connections are invaluable in helping our students gain practical experience and advance their careers.
Thank you all for being a part of our community and for your wonderful support.
Tyler Jarvis,
Director of ACME
